How to get early SEO gains from TikTok... the new Google

Aug 25, 2024

We predicted this 2 years in advance. Yes, bragging rights!

Our internet claim to fame 🔼 Way back July 2021, we predicted that TikTok would finally be Google’s biggest rival in search. There’s something compelling about being able to search for DIY, recipes and other visual tutorials in an accurate, handheld, video format. Words can’t always compete with that. This year, they launched a campaign dedicated to their search capabilities. Here are some simple actions you can implement for your brand:

  • Don’t underestimate its quickly shifting demographics. The app’s reputation for being ‘for kids’ is pretty sticky. But it’s no longer the reality at all. This ad alone shows how they’re repositioning themselves to show more use cases for mature demographics

  • Use TikTok’s native copy to create SEO-optimised ‘captions’ and ‘hide’ them off-screen, alongside its auto-subtitling feature and of course, the main caption. The more metadata in your videos the better indexing

  • Get familiar with the app’s search bar. Explore your category, is there a lot of competition currently? If not, you’ve got a competitive advantage. If there is, as the saying goes, the best time to start was yesterday but the second best time to start is right now.

Who cares about 'what's working' anyway?
In both casual conversations and in business settings alike, we’re always asked how a brand or talent can really stand out: should they follow this viral trend? Or leverage what [insert viral cool brand] is currently doing? The answer almost always lies outside of the above. Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery, but that’s about as far as it’s going to get you. We specialise in dev...
